The traditional summer festival called “Nebuta Matsuri,” held annually from August 2nd to 7th in Aomori City, features large lantern floats made from washi paper depicting kabuki, history, and mythology themes. The highlight of the festival is the parade of these giant doll lanterns, known as “Ningyo Nebuta” which rotate, undulate, and exude a sense of dynamism. Following the floats, dancers known as “Haneto” bring elegance and beauty to the festival with their graceful and vibrant dances, accompanied by rhythmic chants of “Rasserā, Rasserā” as they leap and jump.
Moreover, an essential element in energizing the festival is the “Neputa Bayashi,” a powerful performance created by the coordinated playing of drums on the float, flutes, and handheld percussion instruments resembling ashtrays. This dynamic musical performance contributes to the festive atmosphere.
