The city of Kyoto is a basin surrounded by mountains in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture.
Because of this, it is extremely hot in summer. Some eating and drinking establishments near the river entertain their guests on these terraces, which resemble balconies overhanging the river.
京都は盆地で四方を山に囲まれていますので、熱が逃げにくいのが特徴で京都の夏は、うだるような暑さ。この暑さから生まれたのが夏の風物詩「川床」。川の上やすぐそばに設けられた座敷でのひと時の涼をとることができます。また、鴨川河川敷での河原でのカップルなどの夕涼みも京都らしい光景です。
